OBSERVATION ON
TEACHER

1.1 Planning for Teaching

My Cooperating teaching, Miss Yunita Wulanduri is the only Physical Education (PE) at Kesatuan Bangsa Bilingual School, I immediately got curious. I found out that the school has system where the male and female have separate room, classes, dormitories, and taught separately. Only female teachers are allowed to teach female students, same rules applied to male.  The majority of the school population is Islam, that is why they have this system that follow rules to their religion, respecting their cultural values and in line with their traditions.

During my observation, I discovered that their plan for teaching and methods of the teacher is far different from the Philippines. Each year level has the same sport topic that would span across the weeks of instruction. The difference is the level of difficulty adjusted based on the grade level, age and abilities of the students. In much higher-grade level, the skills taught are much complicated than the lower level. The first week is for the skills demonstration, the second week is for the student practice, and for the third week is for the performance assessment of the students measuring their level of skills.

1.2 Preparing lessons and Materials

In my one week of observation to my Cooperating teacher, she arrives at school very early than her scheduled class. Kesatuan Bangsa School has a teacher-friendly website that they developed where it provides easy access to a wide range of essential resources and tools.  In that Kesatuan Bangsa website Miss Wulandari checked the lesson objectives that she needs to achieve at the end of the lesson, the specific goals and outcomes are written in Miss Wulanduri lesson plan. Miss Wulandari always check the school’s website to ensure that the lesson that she will be teaching would be effective. Miss Wulandari breakdown of how much time she spends in a certain skill and allocate the lesson to make sure that the skills are covered in time.

After she checked all the things, she then proceeds to the field where the students are waiting for her. Miss Wulandari ensures that upon entering the field, she is prepared, organized, and ready to facilitate the Physical Education class.

1.3 Teaching in Classes

In my observation, I was surprised by my Cooperating teacher method of teaching. In Physical Education subject, the teachers do not enter the room to teach the student about the concepts, history, or give lectures, instead the students were on the field, actively engaging to the actual skills of sport. Physical Education classes were almost entirely practical, my cooperating teacher is very hands-on in teaching her students. She let students to stretching before she starts her actual teaching, focusing more on teaching basic skills required to play certain sport. This method of teaching left a strong impression on me, I realized that through this method the students can easily grasp the skills being performed. It integrates the idea that learning through experience or learning by doing can actually more impactful than teaching the students in theoretical manner which made the lessons more memorable and relevant.

1.4 Measurement and Evaluation

In Physical Education, measuring and evaluating the student learning outcomes is all dependent in performance assessment task rather than paper-and-pencil test. During my observation, Miss Wulandari measure the student learning based on their performance: how they perform, what skills they have learned, and how expert they are. Miss Wulandari has scoring sheet in each sport she teaches, including the rubrics, criteria, and overall feedback.

In general, Kesatuan Bangsa Bilingual Boarding School evaluation process is inside the classroom through interactive questioning, another measurement system is through examinations at the end of the semester, quizez, projects, assignment, reports, and based on the students’ performance task. Every three months the school give the calculated grades and feedback to each student and gave it to their parents, so that the students will know the situation of their children and give aligned feedbacks. The official report cards of the students will be given at the final end semester.

The teachers have evaluation process as well. They have supervisions, they called it the process of appraisal. The head of appraisal is in Jakarta, they visited the schools one in each semester to observe the actual teaching and they will ask the difficulty and problems. There is also an internal evaluation, the principal supervises the evaluation process of the teacher in each level. After the supervision, the principal will give suitable feedbacks, suggestions, and recommendations to the teachers to further improve their professionalism.
